First Prize: $25,000 & full support for one organizational representative to attend the XIX International AIDS Conference in Washington, DC, USA
Introduction
AIDS United invites non-profit organizations, both within and outside of the United States (US), to apply for the Innovative Strategy Award for Access and Retention in HIV/AIDS Care. Thirty years into the HIV/AIDS epidemic, there are far too many people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) who are unable to access or stay retained in medical care that can improve or extend their lives. According to a recent article in Clinical Infectious Diseases, only 19% of those living with HIV/AIDS in the US are engaged and retained in medical care in a way that leads to an undetectable viral load. Globally, the World Health Organization reports that only 6.65 million people (out of 34 million) are receiving antiretroviral therapies, representing just 19% of the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. If we are to reach an end to AIDS we must do better to ensure that people are fully engaged and retained in HIV care. We believe that there are innovative strategies being used every day in communities around the world to improve access to care - strategies that have not been replicated or brought to scale. As a funder and policy leader, we know that innovation is needed to promote new solutions for persistent problems and barriers to care. This award will provide an opportunity for organizations around the world to demonstrate innovative strategies and share them with their global peers.
Award Information
AIDS United will recognize the awardee and their innovative access and retention strategy with a $25,000 USD cash prize in unrestricted funding and the opportunity to attend the XIX International AIDS Conference. The awardee will share their story and strategy with the HIV/AIDS community and public health field at a reception in their honor. The awardee will be provided with airfare, lodging, per diem, and conference registration for one representative.
Background
The HIV/AIDS community has a more complex and deeper understanding of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the effects that declining engagement in care can have, most notably increased likelihood of illness, death, and transmission of HIV to others. With the XIX International AIDS Conference being held in the US for the first time in over 20 years, there is an opportunity for US leaders to support shared learning from colleagues across the globe about innovative strategies and approaches that have made a difference. The theme for this year's conference is "Turning the Tide Together." Now more than any other time in the history of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, it is understood that having access to adequate medical care and treatment is critical to "turning the tide." Recent studies that demonstrate significant decreases in transmission of HIV to partners among those who are on treatment and are virally suppressed (96%) provide new hope for ending the pandemic. However, significant barriers continue to exist for PLWHA's ability to access, engage, and be retained in care. Innovative strategies such as peer treatment adherence community support groups, nurse-led medical models, and volunteer community health navigators have been used to address access to care in many different settings. AIDS United has created this Innovative Strategy Award to highlight effective, low-cost, and scalable innovations to begin the end of AIDS.
Innovative Strategy
Successful applicants will clearly describe the innovative strategy that has led to greater access, engagement, and retention in care for PLWHA. In order to demonstrate success, applicants must provide evidence of change and success as a result of implementing their innovative strategies (e.g., when possible please provide measurable outcomes such as number of people accessing antiretroviral treatments, or number of people with an undetectable viral load). We value novel approaches that integrate strategies from intersecting health fields into the HIV/AIDS field. Innovative strategies that are not heavily dependent upon significant resources are of particular interest, as many organizations and communities are facing diminishing resources both in the US and globally. Finally, we look for solutions that can be brought to scale and applied broadly across a range of communities.
The selection committee will evaluate proposals based on the following criteria (in order of importance) :
1. Clearly described innovative strategy that has led to greater access, engagement, and retention in care for PLWHA
2. Evidence of the innovative strategy success based on measureable outcomes
3. Ability to scale up a strategy without significant financial resources
4. Input or involvement of target communities in developing the innovative strategy
Who can apply/eligibility:
NGOs globally. No individuals or government entities.

Networks of People Living with HIV:
It is with pleasure that I am writing to request your help regarding the opening of candidate nominations for appointments to the Medicines Patent Pool Governance Board and to the Medicines Patent Pool Expert Advisory Group (EAG).
Following recent consultations with civil society organisations, the Medicines Patent Pool Board[1] has decided to appoint one Board member from the communities of people living with HIV (PLHIV) and two additional EAG members drawn from organisations representing communities of PLHIV with expertise in the field of work of the Medicines Patent Pool. (All relevant documents are available here: http://www.medicinespatentpool.org/who-we-are2/governance/governance-decisions/pool-eagboard-expansion/)
As part of this process we are asking organisations and networks of PLHIV to nominate suitable candidates who fulfil the requirements for the Board or EAG and who would be willing to participate in the governance of the Medicines Patent Pool.
The Governance Board is responsible for financial and strategic oversight of the Pool, ensuring that all regulatory and financial reporting requirements are fulfilled, and approval of any licensing agreement. Further details on the responsibilities of the Board can be found in the Statutes of the Medicines Patent Pool Foundation[2] and in the attached document on the roles and responsibilities of the Board.
The role of the EAG is to provide the Governance Board and the Executive Director with advice regarding Patent Pool licence negotiations and to assess whether the terms and conditions of proposed licence agreements meet the key requirements as set out by the Medicines Patent Pool statutes and Memorandum of Understanding with UNITAID (MoU) and represent a significant improvement over the current situation. Further details on the EAG can be found in the attached document on roles and responsibilities of the EAG.
Members of the Governance Board and the EAG will be required to act in their individual capacity and within the confidentiality requirements of on-going negotiations.
The working language of the Board and EAG is English.
We would like to invite your organisation to circulate the call for candidatures to your networks and nominate suitable candidates to serve on the Governance Board or the Expert Advisory Group of the Medicines Patent Pool.
The process for nominations is as follows (relevant documents are available here: http://www.medicinespatentpool.org/who-we-are2/governance/governance-decisions/pool-eagboard-expansion/):
§ Networks of PLHIV wishing to nominate qualified candidates should identify candidates that possess the required expertise, qualify for nomination and understand the responsibilities of Board/EAG members as noted in the attached roles and responsibilities documents and are willing to commit to these.
§ Candidates should then complete the attached application form and write a cover letter outlining relevant experience and expertise and interest in joining the Board or EAG. Candidates should reference the roles and responsibilities documents in preparing the letter.
§ The completed form, cover letter, CV and a letter from the nominating organisation should be submitted to office@medicinespatentpool.org by 10 May 2012.
§ Should there be a need to interview candidates, candidates will be informed individually.
§ The Pool Governance Board will then review all applications and select candidates that best complement existing expertise. As stated in the Pool governing documents, Board terms are for 2 years and EAG terms are for 3 years.
§ Organisations will be informed of the outcome by end of June.
I thank you very much for your on-going engagement with the Pool, and look forward to receiving your nominations. Please direct any questions related to the process to office@medicinespatentpool.org and it will be appropriately directed.

Despite major advances in the past 25 years, HIV infection remains a global threat with major scientific, societal and human challenges ahead. With an economic crisis able to undermine public investments, access to HIV prevention, HIV treatment and care are in jeopardy.
The ISHEID seeks to promote scientific excellence and to strengthen the global commitment against HIV/AIDS. It presents new scientific knowledge and offers many opportunities for structured dialogue on the major issues facing the global response against HIV/AIDS.
The 2012 programme will focus on current ‘hot topics’ in HIV research: understanding the mechanisms of HIV persistence and maintenance in reservoirs, trying to find a cure…, but also on socioeconomic and policy aspects. Different sessions will tackle ‘Human Rights & HIV/AIDS’, ‘Prevention of HIV Transmission’, ‘Access to Care’... Ultimately, the meeting will also address recent findings in the fields of viral hepatitis and emerging infectious diseases which need the same kind of global approach.
A variety of session types – from abstract-driven presentations to symposia, workshops and plenary lectures – will meet the needs of various participants. This human scale conference allows to meet international Key Opinion Leaders in a friendly atmosphere, to exchange ideas and to share experience. Consequently, the 2012 ISHEID will offer an exceptional opportunity for professional development and networking.

Now in its eleventh year, PTHC proudly offers a space for transgender people and our allies, families, and providers to come together to re-envision what health means for transgender people. The focus of this unique conference is promoting transgender health and wellness in mind, body, spirit, and community. PTHC recognizes the interconnections among all aspects of our well-being; including health, safety, education, employment, housing, and social support.
Further, PTHC recognizes that accessible and quality healthcare is an integral part of self-determining our bodies and identities in the larger world. As much as possible, PTHC strives to ensure that the conference addresses the diverse needs of all transgender communities: transgender men, transgender women, gender-queer, and gender-variant people, as well as our partners, families, and allies. In addition, in an effort to increase the availability of quality, culturally-competent care for transgender communities, PTHC also provides a workshops for medical, mental health, and social service providers.
